What is Dermaplaning?

 

Dermaplaning is a method of exfoliation where the top layer of the skin, also known as stratum corneum,

dead skin layer and vellus hair (the fine hair on the face and body also called “peach fuzz”) is removed

using a surgical scalpel.  It sounds daunting, but it is actually easier on the skin than most other forms of

hair removal.  Better still, it’s guaranteed to leave your skin looking smoother, brighter and fresher and

can even help to lighten scarring from acne.

 

Since dermaplaning removes the top layer of skin it also promotes cell turnover, helping to stimulate

regrowth. After treatment, the skin is much smoother and the pores are opened so that makeup goes on

easier and skincare products can penetrate deeper, enhancing their effectiveness.

 

Dermaplaning can be used as an alternative to laser treatments and microdermabrasion, and may even

be preferred as it is less stressful on the skin with no recovery time.  It can also be used along with these

other procedures to enhance results even more.

 

Is Dermaplaning Right for Me?

 

Before having any cosmetic procedure it’s important to consider whether it is appropriate for you. Fortunately, dermaplaning can be used on women of all skin types and colors who are 30 or older and want to improve the health and appearance of their skin.  Because it is quick and has very few adverse effects it is even considered a great choice for individuals with sensitive skin and pregnant women. 

 

Will it make the hair on my face grow back thicker and darker?

No. Because dermaplaning focuses on the Vellus, or fine hair, that covers much of the body except for the palms, soles, lips and genital area, it doesn’t cause hair to grow back thicker and darker. Unlike Terminal hair, which grows on the scalp, underarms and pubic region, Vellus hair grows back at the same rate and texture after removal.

 

Is the treatment safe?

One of the biggest benefits of dermaplaning is that it is extremely safe when it is performed by a skilled trained dermal therapist. It is no more risky than shaving your legs and better still, there is no downtime so you can easily fit it into your busy schedule. Does it hurt? Will it cause cuts?

 

Though very effective, dermaplaning is performed using a gentle stretching and scraping motion that makes it painless. There is a risk of small, minor cuts on the skin, but these tiny nicks will generally heal within 24-48 hours.

 

How long is the treatment? How often can I have it done?

Most dermaplaning session last between 45-60  minutes and can be performed every 3-4 weeks. It may take slightly longer if we incorporate enzymes, masks, infusions and LED light therapy. Your aesthetician will work with you to determine the right treatment for your skin. Since dermaplaning removes approximately 21 days worth of dead skin it is important to leave enough time between your appointments so that your skin can fully rejuvenate.
